Phänomenta, Science museum in Flensburg, Germany.
Phänomenta is a science center in Flensburg where visitors can explore physical phenomena through interactive stations. The exhibitions are spread across several buildings in the city, including a historic merchant house and the old Nordertor gate.
Phänomenta grew out of work by Professor Lutz Fiesser at the University of Flensburg in the 1980s and opened in August 1995. From the start, the aim was to bring scientific ideas within reach of a broad public through direct experimentation.
The exhibits are built so that visitors touch, push, pull, and observe without needing to read panels or follow a set route. This hands-on approach works for children and adults alike, turning scientific discovery into something physical and direct.
Because the exhibitions are spread across several locations in the city, it is worth checking in advance which areas are open during your visit. Comfortable shoes are a good idea since getting between the different buildings involves walking.
The Nordertor, one of the few surviving medieval city gates in Schleswig-Holstein, is now part of the center. Scientific exhibits are housed inside this old gate building, making for an unexpected combination that visitors rarely anticipate.
