Hönnetal

Hönnetal is a protected nature reserve along the Hönne River in Balve, featuring limestone cliffs, mixed forests, and several caves across approximately 144 hectares. The valley is shaped by deep gorges carved through limestone by river erosion, creating distinct habitats for specialized wildlife and plant communities.

The protected area was established by the German government in 1979 to preserve its valuable habitats and geological formations. In 2015, additional conservation measures were formally implemented through legal procedures to ensure long-term protection of the site.

This place serves as a refuge for rare bat species like the Bechstein's bat, which inhabit the caves and forests throughout the valley. Visitors can feel the importance of such areas for conservation while walking through the quiet spaces.

The valley is suitable for walking, but visitors should be aware of access restrictions, particularly that caves and rock formations are off-limits to protect fragile ecosystems. Those who want to explore the landscape should stick to marked trails and respect the natural environment.

The Hönne River has cut through Devonian limestone over millions of years, exposing distinctive geological layers that geologists and curious visitors can observe. These rock layers tell the story of an ancient sea that covered this region hundreds of millions of years ago.
