The Schönbuch Tower is an observation structure made of wood and steel located on Stellberg hill near Herrenberg. It has three viewing platforms connected by spiral staircases totaling 174 steps that allow visitors to reach different heights above the forest.
The tower was designed by architecture and engineering students and completed by the engineering firm schlaich bergermann partner. It opened to the public in June 2018 as a viewpoint in the local forest area.
The observation decks provide panoramic views of Schönbuch Nature Park, Heckengäu region, Black Forest, and Swabian Alps from different elevations.
The tower is open from sunrise to sunset and costs nothing to enter. Parking is available near the Naturfreundehaus building or the forest cemetery close by.
The structure uses regional larch wood paired with steel cables and weighs around 110 tons above a foundation of about 400 tons. This combination of materials creates a distinctive form that stands out among other towers in the region.
