A Catholic church was approved in 1975 for the new housing estates of Großer Dreesch, where construction began in 1980. The foundation stone was laid on 29 November 1981, the building was completed on 20 January 1983, and Bishop Heinrich Theissing consecrated the brick church on 30 November 1983. It was financed by a GDR church building programme and designed by Berlin architect Hermann Korneli.
