The area received its Special Area of Conservation designation in 2004 as part of the European Union's initiative to protect natural habitats within the Natura 2000 network.
The stream connects multiple municipalities, including Hohenfelde, Schwartbuck, Köhn, and Giekau, integrating natural resources with local community development and environmental education programs.
