Naturschutzgebiet Bühlchen bei Weißenbach, Protected natural area in Großalmerode, Germany.

Naturschutzgebiet Bühlchen bei Weißenbach covers a Muschelkalk hilltop rising to 537 metres at the northern edge of the Meißner, south of Weißenbach in the Großalmerode municipality. Its shallow, nutrient-poor soils carry a species-rich Kalkmagerrasen of low grasses, juniper, orchids and rare plants, grazed by sheep and goats. The reserve measures 7.95 hectares.

The Bühlchen was first listed as a natural monument on 25 March 1938, when the Wacholdertrift was entered under number 83 in the district of Witzenhausen's register. On 30 October 1985 the Kassel regional authority declared the 7.95-hectare limestone grassland a nature reserve. Since April 1999 the site has formed part of the Meißner and Meißner Vorland FFH area within Natura 2000.

The juniper stands on the Bühlchen grew from grazing: sheep and goats do not eat the young shoots, so the shrubs spread across the pasture. Since 1938 the slope has been protected, and today a grazing project with sheep and goats keeps the turf short so orchids such as Frauenschuh and Fliegen-Ragwurz can flower.

The reserve lies south of Weißenbach, a district of Großalmerode in the Werra-Meißner-Kreis; the Kreisstraße 51 runs past it to the west. The 7.95-hectare area has no marked trail network, and the thin soils on the Muschelkalk cap are sensitive to trampling. Stay on existing paths and keep to the edges of the juniper pasture.

The juniper stands that shape the hilltop are not planted: sheep and goats avoided the young shoots, so the shrubs survived only on grazed slopes. When grazing stops, the open turf scrub over quickly, which is why a grazing project now keeps the site open.
