Bahnbetriebswerk Gera, musée en Allemagne
Bahnbetriebswerk Gera is a former railway maintenance facility in northern Gera, Germany, featuring two large locomotive sheds and a distinctive water tower built around 1908. The site includes auxiliary buildings and a railway crane, all dating from the early 1900s and demonstrating the technical infrastructure once used for servicing and repairing trains.
The facility was established in the early 1900s as a Prussian railway maintenance depot and grew to become an important center for locomotive repairs in the region. In 2011, Deutsche Bahn acquired the property with the goal of opening the site to the public and preserving Gera's railway history.
The railway depot holds significance in Gera's identity as a place where the city preserves its railway heritage. The local railway club Eisenbahnfreunde Gera e.V. brings together train enthusiasts and families to celebrate the skills and dedication of past railway workers.
The site is located north of the main railway station and is easily visible from the platform. Visitors can walk around independently or join organized tours to learn more about the railway machinery and historical operations.
The water tower, with its distinctive spherical tank at the top, is one of the most recognizable structures on the site and once supplied water to the steam locomotives. Today it remains a notable landmark that demonstrates the technical sophistication required to keep the railway running.
