Hofwiesenpark, Park in Gera, Germany

Hofwiesenpark is a green space stretching between the western city center and the Untermhaus district, offering a range of recreational and sports options. The grounds include a swimming area, sports stadium, playground, and minigolf course for different activities.

The Hofwiesen meadows were first mentioned in 1636 and 1647. After World War II the area became a sports park, starting with the Stadion der Freundschaft in 1952. For the Bundesgartenschau 2007 the grounds were redesigned by Dresden landscape architects Hermann Kokenge and Christoph Ritter, whose oval layout won the 2000 competition.

The park's name recalls the Hofwiesen meadows first mentioned in 1636 and 1647. Its central Hofwiesenbühne, one of four oval earth-walled features built for the 2007 Federal Horticultural Show, is still used for open-air performances, while the adjacent Spieloval playground and the preserved flower show remain in use.

The park is open daily from 6:00 to 21:00, and until 22:00 in summer. It lies between Gera's western city center and Untermhaus; the Textimasteg and Untermhäuser Brücke footbridges link it to the opposite bank of the Weiße Elster. The grounds are maintained by an integration company of the Geraer Lebenshilfe that employs 40% people with disabilities.

The park is named after its position below the hill with the former Osterstein Castle, not on the castle grounds themselves. Its four ovals — the play oval, the Hofwiesenbühne stage and the Hofwiesenbad pool ringed by earthen walls — were laid out for the 2007 Federal Horticultural Show.
