Überanger Mark - Hinkesforst, Nature reserve in Ratingen, Germany.
Überanger Mark - Hinkesforst is a protected nature reserve in Ratingen covering about 13.6 hectares of mixed forest and meadow ecosystems. The area sits between the Tiefenbroich and Lintorf neighborhoods and displays varied woodland structures.
The area was placed under protection in 2005 and evolved from a wetter landscape, indicated by the presence of ash, elm, and alder trees. These tree species mark the region's history of higher groundwater levels.
The forest is managed under North Rhine-Westphalian Natural Forest Cell principles, which exclude commercial forestry to allow natural woodland processes to unfold. Visitors walking through can observe how the forest develops without human intervention.
Several marked walking paths run through the reserve, including a circular route through Lintorf forest that connects to neighboring districts. The trails are accessible and allow for varied route lengths depending on your preference.
The forest contains oak and ash trees that are about 140 years old, predating the protection designation by decades. The ground vegetation shows clear traces of historically higher water levels that shaped the woodland ecosystem.
