Burg Angermund, Medieval castle in Angermund, Germany
Burg Angermund is a medieval water castle in Angermund, a district in the north of Düsseldorf in North Rhine-Westphalia. The building has an oval floor plan and sits within a wide moat fed by the Angerbach river, which wraps around the entire structure.
The castle was first recorded in 1167 and served as a fortified base on the southern edge of the historic settlement of Angermund. Over the following centuries it changed hands several times and was rebuilt and extended with each new owner.
The name Angermund points to the mouth of the Angerbach river, and the castle sits right at that junction, making the connection between name and place easy to see. Locals still walk along the water's edge to look at the old walls from across the moat.
The castle is privately owned and cannot be entered, but it can be seen clearly from the walking paths that run along the Angerbach. The paths around the site are flat and easy to follow on foot, so no special preparation is needed.
Although the castle looks compact from the outside, the walled enclosure inside contains a courtyard with several wings built in different periods. These layers of construction are hard to guess from the public paths, which makes the site larger than it first appears.
