Linde am Brunnen vor dem Tore, Natural monument and remarkable tree in Bad Sooden-Allendorf, Germany
Linde am Brunnen vor dem Tore is a protected linden tree standing beside the Zimmersbrunnen fountain at the edge of Bad Sooden-Allendorf. The fountain consists of a sandstone block fitted with a brass spout from which drinking water flows.
The original tree fell in a storm in 1912, and a new one was planted in its place in 1914. The site was officially designated as a natural monument in 1936.
The tree and the fountain beside it are closely tied to the famous German folk song "Der Lindenbaum" by Franz Schubert, which many people know by heart. Visitors who arrive here often feel they are standing inside the song, as the scene matches the words almost exactly.
The tree sits at the edge of town and is easy to reach on foot. An information board on site explains the history of the tree, and the water from the fountain is safe to drink.
In 2014, to mark the centennial of the current tree, more than 500 people gathered here to sing "Der Lindenbaum" together. This gathering shows how a single tree can hold a community together across generations through a shared song.
