Natur- und Tierpark Brüggen, Animal park and nature reserve in Brüggen, Germany
Natur- und Tierpark Brüggen is a woodland park with animal enclosures in the town of Brüggen, in northwestern Germany. The grounds hold animals from different continents, alongside playgrounds and barbecue areas spread throughout the site.
The park was founded in 1958 by Wilhelm Kerren, a factory owner who started with deer and pony enclosures on his land. Over the following decades, the site gradually grew into the animal facility visitors find today.
The snake house on the grounds serves as a rescue center for snakes found in the surrounding area, giving visitors a chance to learn about reptiles up close. It is one of the few spots in a park like this where animal care and education come together in one place.
The park is easy to walk through, and the paths are laid out so you can visit the enclosures at your own pace. There are seating areas and spots suited for a picnic, so a full day visit is very manageable.
The playground equipment found throughout the park was designed and built by founder Wilhelm Kerren himself in his own metalworking workshop. This detail connects the physical fabric of the park directly to the hands of the person who created it.
