Elbschetalviadukt, Railway viaduct in Wengern, Germany
The Elbschetalviadukt is a former railway viaduct in Wengern featuring five stone arches built from Ruhr sandstone at about 30 meters high. It now serves as part of a cycling path linking Witten Wengern and Sprockhövel with several entry points along the route.
The structure was built in 1934 as an important railway connection for passenger and freight trains across the Elbsche Valley. After the railway line closed in 1984, it was later converted to serve the public as a pathway.
The viaduct is now a protected monument showcasing engineering design typical of the 1930s in this industrial region. Visitors can observe the craftsmanship of that era while walking or cycling across it.
The pathway across the viaduct is easy to walk or cycle and has several entry and exit points for convenience. The route winds through quiet countryside and works well for recreational rides or walks.
The 2014 restoration proved so successful that the viaduct is now a favored spot for recreational cycling trips. The route demonstrates how old industrial infrastructure can be creatively repurposed for public use.
