Eiderkaserne, Military barracks in Rendsburg, Germany
Eiderkaserne is a military complex in Rendsburg covering about 19 hectares with brick buildings featuring decorative plaster details and North German Renaissance design elements. The main structure displays a distinctive three-wing layout with a central building section.
The complex was built between 1903 and 1905 for the German Imperial Army and later served different military forces including British, Danish, and Norwegian troops after 1945. This meant the site hosted various national military presences over several decades.
The main building earned the nickname 'Castle by the Sea' because of its three-wing layout and palace-like appearance with a central main section. This distinctive shape still defines how people experience the entire complex today.
The site sits next to the B77 highway and was later transformed into the Neuwerk-West residential district housing around 700 residents. A 377 meter noise protection wall shields the housing area from road traffic sound.
From 1962 to 1997 the complex housed the international NATO corps LANDJUT responsible for southern Denmark, Schleswig-Holstein, and Hamburg. This international military role held major strategic importance during the Cold War for the region.
