Iduna-Zentrum, Residential and commercial complex in Göttingen, Germany.
The Iduna-Zentrum is a mixed-use complex in Göttingen, Germany, combining residential, office, and retail spaces across several connected buildings. A tall residential tower rises above the lower sections, and the whole complex is tied together at street level by a shared pedestrian area.
The complex was completed in 1975, commissioned by Iduna Vereinigte Lebensversicherung, an insurance company based in Hamburg. Architect Friedrich Wagener designed it as part of a broader post-war idea about how modern urban life should be organized.
The Iduna-Zentrum reflects a planning idea that was popular in West Germany during the 1970s, bringing together housing, offices, and shops in one place. You can still see how local residents move through the ground floor passages as part of their daily routine.
The complex sits in a central part of Göttingen and is easy to reach on foot from the city center. Because the sections connect at ground level, you can move through the whole place without going back outside.
The building takes its name from the insurance company that commissioned it, a company that no longer exists as an independent entity. It is relatively uncommon for a building like this to keep a corporate name after the commissioning company merged and disappeared.
