Theater im OP

Theater im OP is a performance space at the University of Göttingen housed in a former operating room of the university medical center. The room features two elongated seating sections facing each other, creating an intimate performance area between them.

The theater was created in 1984 when the German studies department converted a former anatomy lecture hall into a performance space. This renovation helped establish a new venue for the university.

The space was developed by students and faculty for staging productions, and each year presents a series of new works. The community uses it actively to gain stage experience and bring artistic projects to life.

The theater has around 120 seats and hosts performances regularly throughout the academic year. Visitors should check in advance for current shows, since the program changes with the semester schedule.

The building was originally a medical teaching space, which gives productions an unusual spatial concept. The opposing audience sections allow a form of theater based on mutual attention between viewers.
