Plotzsägemühle

Plotzsägemühle is a sawmill with restaurant and lodging beside the Alb river in the Black Forest region. The building combines timber-frame construction with working mill machinery and sits in a natural setting along the water.

The site began in the 13th century as the region's first sawmill and shaped the area's economic development. Following a fire in 1697, it was reconstructed shortly after and resumed its operations.

The structure reflects local building traditions with its timber-frame design and represents the importance of craftsmanship in the region. Visitors can observe how water powered the machinery and understand the role this work held in the daily life of the community.

The location is best reached on foot or by bicycle since it sits within a protected nature area with limited vehicular access. Visitors should wear appropriate clothing for the damp microclimate around the mill and watch footing along the water pathways.

Inside is a technical museum displaying artifacts from milling history, including an original gate saw blade from the late 17th century. This collection offers an uncommon look at working techniques from that era and shows how craftspeople used their tools.
