Wildsee, Bog pond in Gernsbach and Bad Wildbad, Germany.
Wildsee is a bog pond situated between Gernsbach and Bad Wildbad at roughly 900 meters elevation. A wooden boardwalk crosses over the water, allowing visitors to walk directly through the moorland landscape without disturbing the surrounding habitat.
The bog formed roughly 10,000 years ago due to geological conditions and high rainfall in the region. Over millennia, this wet environment developed into the specialized habitat visible today.
The Black Forest Club maintains the site within the Kaltenbronn Nature Reserve, demonstrating German commitment to environmental protection through structured conservation efforts.
The site is accessible via marked hiking trails from several starting points in the region. Information boards along the routes help visitors understand the moorland and its features.
The water rests on an eight-meter-deep peat layer that supports specialized plants like cottongrasses and mosses found in few other places. Walking the boardwalk reveals a landscape type that has largely disappeared from most of Europe.
