Sommerbergbahn, Funicular railway in Bad Wildbad, Germany

The Sommerbergbahn is a metre-gauge funicular from Bad Wildbad (420 m) to the Sommerberg, 738 m long with a 291 m height difference and gradients of 370 to 530 per mille. Two cars meet at a passing loop; the upper station has a three-storey building with a café-restaurant and terrace.

The railway opened in 1908 and has been part of the town's landscape ever since. It has been modernized several times over the decades to meet current safety standards.

The two cars of the 2011 rebuild are named König Wilhelm II. and Königin Charlotte, recalling the Württemberg royal couple who rode the line to the Sommerberg on 1 July 1910. Car 1 of the third generation stands as a technical monument in front of Bad Wildbad station.

The valley station sits at Uhlandplatz, where the S6 Karlsruhe Stadtbahn stop allows direct transfer since the Enztalbahn was extended in 2003. Trains run every 30 minutes during the day, with extra trips added when demand is high. Holders of VPE tickets get a reduction, and the journey to the top takes about 3.5 minutes.

The two cars are linked by a cable about 800 metres long, running over a pulley in the upper station and driven by an electric motor. Since 2011 the cars have been named König Wilhelm II and Königin Charlotte, after the Württemberg royal couple who rode the line on 1 July 1910.
