Baumwipfelpfad Schwarzwald, Canopy walkway in Bad Wildbad, Germany
The Baumwipfelpfad Schwarzwald is a wooden walkway that winds about 1250 meters through the tree canopy, sometimes reaching 20 meters above the forest floor. The path takes visitors up into the branches and opens views across the different layers of the woods.
The walkway opened in 2014 as a way to let people experience the forest from above and see how it is built from the top down. Since then it has changed how many visitors think about this part of the Black Forest.
Information stations along the route teach about the animals and plants that live in the Black Forest and how they depend on each other. Visitors discover how the forest works and why each part of it matters.
The entire walkway is wheelchair and stroller-friendly with a gentle slope throughout the 1.2-kilometer route and no stairs to climb. Wear shoes with good grip, since the wooden surface can become slippery, especially when wet.
A 55-meter-long tube slide is tucked inside the observation tower and shoots visitors down from the 25-meter-high platform. This surprising feature catches many visitors off guard who expected only a quiet walk.
