Heimatmuseum Löhne, Local history museum in Löhne, Germany
The Museum der Stadt Löhne, formerly known as Heimatmuseum Löhne, is a local history museum in the town of Löhne, North Rhine-Westphalia. It occupies a former school building and includes a reconstructed cigar maker's house and a timber-framed granary, with exhibits covering archaeology, rural life, textile work, cigar making, photography, woodworking, and railways.
The museum opened in 1984 in a former school building, driven by the local heritage association. In the 1990s, a cigar maker's house from Obernbeck and a timber-framed granary from Melbergen were rebuilt on the site, and in 2022 the institution was renamed Museum der Stadt Löhne.
The museum is a meeting place for locals, with workshops, family afternoons, and projects that involve residents of all ages in telling the town's story. School classes from the area regularly visit as part of a program called Kultur entdecken, and the exhibits often include objects donated by families from Löhne.
The museum is housed in a former school building with several themed rooms, so allow enough time to explore the permanent exhibition and any special displays. The site includes outdoor structures, so check the weather and wear comfortable shoes for walking between buildings.
Among the archaeological finds is a 7.7-meter (25-foot) dugout canoe from the sixth century, one of the larger pieces in the collection. The museum also holds photographs from a family photography studio that operated for three generations in Löhne.
