Alheimer-Kaserne, Military barracks in Rotenburg an der Fulda, Germany
Alheimer-Kaserne is a military barracks installation in Rotenburg an der Fulda, stretching along Kreisstraße K 60 with extensive training grounds and residential facilities for personnel. The site contains functional buildings and organized spaces designed for military operations and daily activities.
The installation was built between 1958 and 1961 and housed Panzergrenadierbataillon 51 from 1962 until 2016, when military operations at the site ended. This period marked the primary role of the barracks as an active military post.
The barracks took their name from the nearby Alheimer mountain in 1966, connecting the installation to the local landscape and geography. Memorial stones on the grounds honor soldiers and civilians lost in both World Wars, serving as quiet reminders of past conflicts.
The facility has been transformed into a federal police training center since 2021, accommodating around 450 police trainees and support staff. The existing infrastructure supports this new educational function effectively.
During German reunification in 1989, the site temporarily sheltered 394 East German refugees seeking new lives. This episode reflects how the location played an unexpected role during a pivotal moment in recent history.
