Würfelwiese, Public park in northern downtown Halle (Saale), Germany
Würfelwiese is a public park in northern downtown Halle (Saale) that runs along the Saale River with open green spaces. The grounds include sports facilities and a playground designed as a pirate ship for children.
Before the Reformation, the area was part of Neuwerk Monastery, where monks cultivated vegetable gardens and gave the place its former name Kohlwiese. An obelisk was installed near the riverbank in 1814 to remember soldiers who died in the Battle of Leipzig.
Since 2011, weekly singing gatherings happen here during summer months, bringing people together outdoors for shared musical moments. These events have become part of how locals use the space as a meeting place.
The park can be reached from multiple bridges on different sides, making it easy to enter from various directions. You can find parking options at Friedemann-Bach-Platz and along Robert-Franz-Ring, though most require payment.
The name "Würfelwiese" literally means "cube meadow," but it actually comes from the shape of the original parcels rather than from dice or geometric cubes. This origin is often overlooked by visitors who interpret the name differently.
