Affenfelsen, High-rise building at Gisselberger Straße, Marburg, Germany.
Affenfelsen is a 14-story residential building at the intersection of two main streets, rising about 51 meters above the surrounding city. The structure was built in exposed concrete using Brutalist design and contains hundreds of apartments with contemporary amenities.
The building was constructed in 1973, replacing a traditional inn that had stood on this site since 1783 and served as an important rest stop on the route to Frankfurt. This development marks Marburg's shift toward modern urban renewal in the post-war period.
The name derives from a former inn that once occupied this location. The building reflects how Marburg transformed in the 1970s when contemporary residential architecture arrived in this historic area.
The building sits at a major traffic intersection with good connections to public transportation and nearby shops. Multiple vantage points throughout the structure offer views across Marburg, particularly from the upper floors.
The structure was designed by architect Hans-Werner Schreyer and stands as the tallest residential building in central Marburg. Its distinctive concrete facade without decorative elements has defined the city's appearance for over 50 years.
