The structure, originally inaugurated in 1913 as the Peace Chapel of the Evangelical Free Church congregation, received monument protection status in 1986.
The museum displays approximately 1000 pieces from Frank Hense's collection, including works by Stephan Balkenhol, Tilo Baumgärtel, and numerous German contemporary artists.
The museum opened in June 2021 after extensive renovations that preserved the historical features while creating suitable spaces for art exhibitions.
The building transformation from a religious space to an art venue maintains original architectural elements while serving as a platform for contemporary art.
