Ashanti Region, Administrative region in central Ghana.
Ashanti Region is an administrative division in central Ghana with Kumasi as its capital and 43 districts under its governance. The region covers forested areas and plains, connecting numerous towns through a road network.
The area was once the center of the powerful Ashanti Empire, founded under King Osei Tutu in the late 17th century and ruling over large parts of West Africa. Colonial confrontations with the British in the 19th century led to military conflicts that ended with incorporation into the former Gold Coast.
The Kejetia Market in Kumasi stands as the largest open-air market in West Africa, where merchants sell traditional Kente cloth, gold jewelry, and regional agricultural products.
Visitors can choose between urban centers and rural villages, finding numerous accommodations and transport options across the region. The airport in Kumasi offers connections to other parts of the country.
Lake Bosomtwe formed through a meteorite impact over one million years ago and is today a popular destination for recreation and fishing. The water in this round crater lake has no visible outflow and is fed only by rain and tributaries.
