Kumasi Zoo, Zoological garden near Kejetia Bus Terminal in Kumasi, Ghana
Kumasi Zoo is a zoological garden in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region in Ghana. The grounds are spread across a wooded area and house a range of animals including lions, chimpanzees, buffaloes, and several snake species.
The zoo was founded in 1951, before Ghana gained independence in 1957, making it one of the earliest zoological facilities in the country. Its opening placed it at the center of a period of major change for the region.
The zoo sits close to the Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, one of the most recognized landmarks in Kumasi. Many visitors combine a trip here with a walk through the surrounding neighborhood, giving the place a casual, everyday feel.
Arriving early in the morning gives the best chance of seeing the animals when they are most active. The climate in Kumasi is warm and humid throughout the year, so light clothing and sun protection are a good idea.
Large colonies of fruit bats roost in the trees across the grounds and are visible during the day hanging in clusters. As the afternoon fades, they begin to stir, which is a striking sight that many visitors do not expect to see at a zoo.
