Fort Goede Hoop, Dutch colonial fort in Senya Beraku, Ghana
Fort Goede Hoop is a Dutch colonial fort in Senya Beraku with four bastions and a rectangular design. The structure contains officer quarters, storage rooms for merchandise, and access to a beach landing area.
The Dutch built the fort in 1667 as a trading post and expanded it into a square fortress in 1715. This rebuild allowed them to manage growing trade volumes and later serve purposes far darker than commerce.
The fort's name reflects Dutch hopes for prosperity through trade with the region. You can see the spaces where merchants conducted business and where European settlers and local communities interacted and exchanged goods.
The site is accessible year-round, and guided tours help visitors understand the bastions, walls, and former storage areas. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the structures sit directly on sand and the ground can be uneven.
Inside one of the bastions are preserved prison cells that testify to the dark past of this location. These spaces show how the fort evolved from storing goods to confining human beings.
