The King of Acron requested the Dutch West India Company to construct this defensive structure in 1697 between the kingdoms of Fante and Agona.
The fort represents the complex relationships between European traders and local communities during the colonial period along the Ghanaian coastline.

The structure evolved from a small trading lodge to a fortification with demi-bastions, incorporating postal services and law enforcement facilities by 1721.
