Shai Hills Resource Reserve

Shai Hills Resource Reserve is a nature reserve featuring grassy plains and dry forests where numerous plant and animal species live. The landscape spans a large area with different habitats that support the wildlife found here.

British colonial forces displaced the Shai people from this area in 1892, leaving behind archaeological remains. This past is visible in the artifacts and remnants scattered throughout the reserve today.

The Manya Ancestral Home settlement within the reserve reveals how earlier inhabitants lived and organized their daily lives. Walking through this area shows the connection these people had with the land around them.

The reserve sits some distance from Accra and is accessible via a main highway. The best time to visit is in the morning when animals are more active and light conditions favor exploring the landscape.

Zebras have been bred within the reserve, and their offspring now live in other zoological facilities across the country. This breeding work shows how the reserve contributes to animal conservation beyond its natural boundaries.
