Construction of the cathedral started in 1952 after Apostolic Delegate David Matthews proposed the project, with initial services held in 1953 without a roof.
The cathedral functions as the principal church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, hosting numerous religious ceremonies and national celebrations throughout the year.
The Cathedral Restoration Project, launched in 2015, addresses structural improvements with a revised budget of USD1.02 million to maintain the building's integrity.
The cathedral's stained glass windows present biblical narratives through detailed artistry, while its gardens provide space for community gatherings and reflection.
