Dendra

Dendra is a Bronze Age burial site near Nafplio with several types of tombs from the Mycenaean period. It contains a tholos tomb, three burial mounds, and sixteen chamber tombs that reveal how people were laid to rest in ancient times.

A Swedish archaeologist excavated the site in the 1920s and discovered Mycenaean tombs that had remained untouched since ancient times. These findings provided key insights into burial practices and life in this early civilization.

The name refers to an ancient burial ground where people honored their dead over many generations. The tombs show how much family bonds and social rank mattered in this early civilization.

The site lies several kilometers east of Argos and is best explored on foot with sturdy shoes. Bring water and sun protection, as the area offers little shade and can be uncomfortable in hot weather.

Excavations revealed the remains of horses buried together with their wealthy owners in the tombs. This discovery shows how important these animals were to the upper class of Mycenaean society.
