Dia, Protected island in Gouves, Greece
Dia is a small island in the Aegean Sea off the coast of Crete, covering several square kilometers of land. It rises up to 200 meters (650 ft) above sea level and features rocky terrain with sheltered coves along its shoreline.
Archaeological evidence shows the island was inhabited during Minoan times, with traces of ancient settlements scattered across the land. Human activity on the island continued through different ancient periods.
The island appears in Greek mythology and functions today as a refuge for rare Mediterranean plants and animals that struggle to survive elsewhere.
Boats depart regularly from the northern coast of Crete to reach the island, with several trips available during the warmer months. Bring water and sun protection, as the rocky terrain offers little shade.
The waters surrounding the island form a marine protected zone where fish, sea turtles, and other rare sea creatures find shelter and breed. This protection makes it a valuable spot for watching marine life that is rarely seen near tourist areas.
