Megaro Fytaki, Protected building in Heraklion, Greece.
Megaro Fytaki is a multi-story building with neoclassical details such as cornices, pillars, and decorated balconies on its front. The ground floor features handcrafted wooden doors with decorative carvings, and two large skylights bring light into the interior spaces.
Built between 1926 and 1930, this was the first multi-story building to rise in Heraklion. Its construction marked a turning point in the city's growth during the interwar period.
The building shows how Heraklion mixed living spaces with shops during the interwar years, reflecting how city life was organized in those times. You can see the blend of residential and commercial uses that shaped urban daily life.
The building now operates as a hotel while preserving its historical character, allowing visitors to experience the original architecture and details. Its central location in Heraklion makes it easy to reach, and you can view the original exterior from multiple angles throughout the neighborhood.
The two large skylights in the roof are distinctive and show careful planning of interior light. This feature was a rare and modern solution for lighting multi-story buildings when it was built.
