Chania International Airport, International airport in Souda Bay, Greece
The airport is located on the Akrotiri peninsula and features a single terminal building with a 3,347-meter (10,965-foot) runway serving domestic and international flights year-round. The facility includes multiple check-in counters, duty-free shops, and a waiting area overlooking the runway.
The facility opened in 1967 and was named after Ioannis Daskalogiannis, who fought against Ottoman rule in Crete. The original site was designed for only two aircraft, but was expanded later to handle growing traffic.
The terminal displays photographs and information panels about Cretan resistance movements and regional Mediterranean maritime customs across the centuries.
Chania city center is about 15 kilometers from the terminal and is reachable by bus, taxi, or rental car. Bus services run regularly with fixed schedules, taxis operate with standard rates, and car rental desks are located near baggage claim.
The facility operates as both a civilian hub and an active Hellenic Air Force base, creating a blend of commercial and military flight operations. This dual purpose has shaped its development since opening.
