Elassona, town in Thessalia, Greece
Elassona is a small town in the Thessaly region located on the northern side of Mount Olympus. The Elassonitis River runs through it, dividing the newer town area from the older quarter called Varosi with its traditional stone houses and narrow streets.
The ancient port city of Olosson mentioned by Homer is linked to present-day Elassona. The place played an important role in the Trojan War, led by a commander named Polypoetes, showing the historical importance of this region in ancient times.
The name Elassona traces back to ancient Olosson, which Homer called the White Olosson. The town preserves its rural traditions today, especially in cheesemaking and yearly celebrations where the community gathers to share its history and customs.
The town is accessible by good roads and sits on a direct route to places like Katerini and Thessaloniki. Visitors can easily reach nearby villages and natural attractions, and several days are suitable for exploring the wider area.
An old stone bridge over the Elassonitis River from the 13th century replaced an even older one, and legend says egg whites from 3,000 eggs were used in the mortar. This remarkable structure shows the craftsmanship and ingenuity of the workers of that era.
