Zea harbor, Maritime port in Piraeus, Greece.
Zea Harbor is a marina in Piraeus, the main port district of Athens, built around a round natural bay that shelters leisure boats and larger yachts. A paved walkway runs all the way around the water, giving a clear view of the moored vessels from every angle.
This bay was used by Athens as far back as the 8th century BC and later became one of the city's main ports for both warships and merchant trade. Over the centuries its military role faded, and it was eventually developed into the leisure marina it is today.
Locals call this harbor Pasalimani, a name still used in everyday speech more often than the official one. The waterfront is lined with taverns and cafes where people sit outside and watch the boats from their tables.
The paved path around the harbor is easy to walk at any time and well lit in the evening, making it a comfortable place to stroll after dark. Cafes and restaurants around the waterfront give plenty of natural landmarks for orienting yourself as you walk the loop.
Below the modern marina floor lie the remains of ancient ship sheds where Athens stored its warships, studied by international researchers since 2001. The work has revealed details about how wooden hulls were built and kept dry more than 2,400 years ago.
