Philippi, Archaeological site in Krinides, Greece

The excavated ruins contain a Roman theater, public baths, basilicas, and sections of ancient walls spread across extensive grounds near Mount Pangaion.

Philip II of Macedon established the city in 360 BC as a strategic location to control gold mines and trade routes in northeastern Greece.

The site marks the location where Apostle Paul founded the first Christian church in Europe and wrote his Epistle to the Philippians.

The archaeological site opens daily from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with guided tours available in multiple languages through the visitor center.

The preserved section of Via Egnatia, the ancient Roman road connecting Rome to Constantinople, runs through the center of the archaeological site.
