Saint Nicola's church

Saint Nicola's Church is an Ottoman-style church in Kavala with one central dome and walls of brick and stone. A bell tower now stands where a minaret once rose, reflecting how the building was adapted over time.

The building was originally constructed in 1530 as the Ibrahim Pasha Mosque under Ottoman rule. It became a Christian church during the 1920s when the region's circumstances changed.

A mural on the eastern wall depicts Apostle Paul arriving at Kavala's port, linking the building to early Christian traditions of the region. This image helps visitors understand the spiritual importance of the area throughout the centuries.

The building is centrally located in Kavala and easy to reach on foot. It typically remains open for local worship services and is administered by the Metropolis of Philippi, Neapolis, and Thasos.

Beneath the current building lie remnants of an Early Christian basilica, discovered during archaeological excavations. Visitors can spot traces of this older structure within the Bema of the Apostle Paul.
