Daphni Monastery, Byzantine monastery in Chaidari, Greece
Daphni Monastery is a Byzantine sacred site in Chaidari with an octagonal floor plan and a central dome. Massive defensive walls surround the complex and define its boundaries.
The sanctuary was established in the 6th century on the ruins of the Temple of Apollo Daphnaios. In the 11th century, it underwent extensive transformation during the height of the Byzantine Empire.
The interior mosaics show Byzantine craftsmanship from the 11th century with gold backgrounds and detailed depictions of holy figures. These precious works reflect the artistic flourishing of that period.
Visitors should know that the sanctuary opens on specific weekdays and viewing from outside already gives a good impression. Guided visits help better understand the architectural details and interior structures.
The site preserves ancient Ionic columns from the original Apollo temple, with some examples transported to London. These architectural remains connect pre-Christian and Byzantine history in one place.
