Julia and Alexander Ν. Diomedes Botanic Garden, Botanical garden in Haidari district, Greece
The Julia and Alexander N. Diomedes Botanic Garden is a large outdoor space organized into distinct areas for trees, ornamental plants, and medicinal herbs. The grounds include research facilities, greenhouse structures, and walking paths that connect the different sections.
The garden was founded in 1951 through a charitable foundation established by Alexander Diomedes and opened to visitors in 1975. The design was created by landscape architect Herta Hammerbacher, whose vision shaped how the site is organized.
The garden was named after its donors Alexander and Julia Diomedes and today serves the University of Athens as a living laboratory for plant study and conservation. Walking through, visitors notice how different sections support both teaching and scientific inquiry.
The garden is located in the Chaidari municipality and easy to navigate with marked paths and signposted sections throughout the grounds. Wear sturdy shoes since the terrain is uneven and paths vary in difficulty across different areas.
The garden focuses on protecting rare and endangered plant species and maintains a seed bank containing over 800 different plant types. This effort makes it function as a living refuge for botanical diversity that might vanish elsewhere.
