Sanctuary of Aphrodite in Chaidari

The Sanctuary of Aphrodite in Chaidari is an ancient religious site with a small temple, altar, and several structures arranged along an old route connecting to Eleusis. The layout includes a courtyard area and a four-sided building as integral parts of the complex.

The ancient traveler Pausanias documented this site during his travels, confirming its existence in historical records as an established shrine. It served as a significant religious stop for people journeying along major routes in antiquity.

Carved niches in the rock held offerings left by worshippers such as small statues of the goddess, doves, and pomegranates, revealing how people expressed their devotion at this spot.

The northern part of the ancient road shows wear from pedestrian traffic, while the southern section displays tracks from chariot use, allowing visitors to see how different groups traveled. Walking the path gives a sense of how journeys to this site felt in ancient times.

Inscriptions in the carved niches show that women left most offerings at this shrine, though some male names appear in the dedications as well. This reveals the site held special importance for visitors seeking help with matters that concerned women.
