Megaris, Historical region in southern Greece
Megaris lies between Mount Geraneia and the Saronic Gulf and was an important center in ancient Greece. Two hills marked the location where the city of Megara developed and exercised its influence.
The region emerged as a trading center and founded major colonies across the Mediterranean during the 8th century BCE, including Chalcedon and Byzantium on the Bosporus. These settlements made it a naval power whose influence reached far beyond its borders.
The people of Megaris spoke the Doric dialect and developed a philosophical school whose ideas later shaped early Stoic thought. This intellectual tradition left a lasting mark on the ancient world.
The region sits on the A8 motorway connecting Athens and Corinth and offers regular train connections via the Proastiakos suburban railway. Visitors can choose between private transport and public options depending on how much time they have available.
The region controlled the island of Salamis for centuries until Athens seized it in the late 7th century BCE through military force. This struggle over the island marked a turning point in regional power dynamics.
