Aquaworld Aquarium, Marine life and reptile center in Hersonissos, Greece
Aquaworld Aquarium is a marine and reptile center in Hersonissos, Crete, with several connected rooms where fish and reptiles are kept in purpose-built habitats. The rooms lead visitors past tanks of Mediterranean fish and enclosures housing rescued reptiles.
Aquaworld Aquarium was founded in 1995 by John Bryce McLaren, a Scot who settled in Hersonissos. It is one of only three aquariums in Greece. Most of the animals on display were rescued or were unwanted pets given a home here, and the museum is financed through admission fees.
The facility teaches environmental care through hands-on encounters with animals, giving visitors direct experience with marine habitats and rescue efforts. The focus is on understanding how people can help injured sea creatures.
The center sits in the middle of Hersonissos and is easy to reach on foot from the main road. Those who want to spend time with the reptile section should allow extra time, as those rooms are smaller and less bright.
The center takes in reptiles that were kept as pets and could no longer be cared for by their owners. These animals stay on permanently and become part of the regular display.
