Skotino cave, Archaeological cave site in Gouves, Greece
The Skotino cave extends 160 meters deep and 36 meters wide, containing multiple chambers with natural limestone formations throughout its interior passages.
Arthur Evans conducted the first archaeological examination of the cave in 1933, leading to discoveries of ancient artifacts from early Minoan periods.
The cave functioned as a religious sanctuary where people made offerings to a female fertility deity, with evidence of continuous worship from 1900 BC to 400 AD.
Visitors can reach the cave entrance through a series of steps leading down through a green doline, with no admission fee required for exploration.
The main chamber, known as the Great Temple, measures 130 meters in length and contains water-filled troughs formed by stalactite drips used in ancient ceremonies.
