Stadium at Olympia, Ancient stadium in Olympia, Greece
The Stadium at Olympia is an ancient arena in the Ancient Olympia Municipality, Greece, consisting of a long rectangular track flanked by earth embankments on both sides. Stone markers still visible on the ground indicate the starting and finishing lines where runners competed over two millennia ago.
Construction took place during the 6th century BCE, establishing the site as the main venue for athletic contests during the ancient Olympic cycle. Competitions continued here until 393 CE, when the games ceased following an imperial decree.
The south embankment holds a raised platform that once seated judges and distinguished guests watching the races below. Competitors entered through a vaulted passageway, a ceremonial approach that heightened the sense of occasion before stepping onto the track.
The site lies within the archaeological park and can be reached via a level path from the main entrance. Visitors wanting to walk the length of the ancient track should wear sturdy shoes, as the ground is uneven.
The track measures 600 ancient feet, a unit derived directly from the body proportions of athletes at the time. Archaeologists have identified grooves in the starting line where runners placed their toes before the signal to begin.
