Eleftherios Venizelos Museum of Chalepa, Historical residence museum in Chalepa, Chania, Greece
The Eleftherios Venizelos Museum of Chalepa is a two-story residence in Chania that combines private living spaces and bedrooms on the ground floor with formal reception areas on the first floor. The house is accessed via wooden and stone staircases and spans three floors with a total of 18 exhibition rooms.
The house was the residence of Eleftherios Venizelos from 1880 to 1910 while he built his political career in Crete before becoming Prime Minister and relocating to Athens. During World War II, the building suffered damage from bombardment during the Battle of Crete and later served as headquarters for German military forces.
The residence displays rooms where Venizelos lived with his family, preserving personal items that reflect his daily life and work as a political leader. Visitors gain insight into how the local elite lived in Chania during the 1800s.
The museum is located in the Chalepa area of Chania and housed in a traditional mansion that requires climbing several staircases to navigate. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and check current opening hours before visiting, as the facility has operated since 2015.
The museum preserves original furniture and personal possessions distributed across 18 exhibition rooms that reveal how Venizelos used and organized his home. This collection of authentic pieces allows visitors to gain an everyday glimpse of his life rather than seeing only his political accomplishments.
