Rentina Castle, Byzantine fortification in Volvi Municipality, Greece
The castle sits on a hilltop at the western side of the Rentina strait and overlooks the trade routes between two major cities. Stone structures spread across the site and reveal different construction phases from various periods.
The fortification rose in the early medieval centuries as a protective post for the trade route. Later, additional walls were added and the structure was rebuilt and expanded several times.
Local people and visitors recognize this site mainly through the archaeological discoveries that speak of intensive trade and commerce. The many coins and pottery pieces show how important this location was for the economy.
To visit the grounds, wear comfortable shoes and start from the area near Agia Marina Church. The path runs along a major road and takes about 20 minutes to reach the ruins.
Underground water towers that served as storage and workshops dot the site, with wooden frames from the 10th century still visible. These buried structures reveal the engineering skill of the people who once lived here.
