Thisavros lake, reservoir in Greece
Thisavros lake is a large reservoir in northeastern Greece created by a dam over 170 meters (560 feet) high on the Nestos River. The water covers a wide area and serves to irrigate approximately 81,000 hectares of farmland while generating electricity through three turbines.
The dam was built between 1986 and 1996 by the Greek government and stands as the tallest dam in Greece. Its construction enabled control of water flow from the Nestos River and transformed regional agriculture and power generation.
The reservoir plays a central role in the daily life of local farming communities and is named after the dam that created it. The quiet landscape reflects how people here depend on the water for irrigation and traditional livelihoods.

The power station is a pumped-storage facility with three turbines that can operate in reverse, pumping water back into the reservoir during periods of lower electricity demand. This dual function balances energy production between daytime peaks and quieter nighttime hours.
