Monastery of Malevi

The Monastery of Malevi is an Orthodox monastery in North Kynouria situated at roughly 900 meters elevation on Mount Parnon. The complex includes multiple churches dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Saint Nilos, set within a protected cedar forest.

The monastery was founded in the 8th century and moved multiple times before establishing at its present location. Its relocation in 1616 under Abbot Joseph Karatzas marked the beginning of its stable period at this mountain site.

The monastery is known for the venerated icon of the Virgin Mary that draws visitors throughout the year. The iconostasis and daily religious practices show how pilgrims experience this place as a center of faith and devotion.

The monastery sits at elevation and is best visited in fair weather when mountain roads are safer for travel. Bring warm clothing as the high altitude means cooler temperatures year-round, and check locally about access before your visit.

The monastery preserves an icon of the Virgin Mary from 1360, one of the oldest artworks at the site. This historical representation draws visitors interested in experiencing the craftsmanship and spiritual depth of medieval Byzantine painting.
